It's one of those cyclical things that happen in sports. The US has a fantastic heritage in tennis. It has produced many great champions over the years, and the previous generation was phenominal. Just as McEnroe and Connors were starting to slow down, along came Sampras, Agassi, Courier, and Chang who proved to be more than worthy successors. With their combined haul of 27 Grand Slam titles, they dominated most of the past decade. Unfortunately, with all of those greats now retired, their shoes are proving very hard to fill. While the US has a number of very good players, there is not that one great player who has stood out from the pack. Andy Roddick won the 03 US Open and reached the #1 spot, but has struggled lately. James Blake has been very impressive over the last 6 months, but he's still waiting for that big breakthrough performance. That said, it is unfair to hold the current generation up to the standards of their predecessors. At some point the US will produce more legends, but the media's impatience will not help.

As they've already said, any era seems the Golden Era to the ones living it, or reminiscing about an earlier one they miss. I've only been paying attention to tennis a few years, but it does seem like you're saying; a few dominant players are most of the game as covered, with seemingly less actual competition, less possibility, than is probably healthy for the game. Tennis might have a greater audience, particularly in the US, with more anticipation of what might happen next. (As much as I like watching the 'usual suspects' play, I probably like seeing relative unknowns a bit more a lot of the time.) What I'd really love to see is public school tennis programs; an acknowledgement of tennis and support for it at the fundamental level. That could really change everything.

It's not a very popular sport amongst adolescent males in this country. Baseball, basketball, football, soccer, golf, hockey, and I'm sure some others are vastly more popular and more commonly played by America's youth. Therefore, I would tend to believe that tennis gets much less exposure here, especially in urban areas. If it's played so much less, it stands to reason that you would see fewer successful male tennis players from the USA. Of course, McEnroe, Sampras, Courier, Agassi, Ashe, and many others have established a pretty decent track record for American men's tennis through the decades, haven't they? Or is your post just another stupid cheap shot at this country? Nice agenda, genius. I'm sure the world takes you seriously and cares greatly about your meaningful opinions.

because the US doesn't have places where alot of males can go and practice and learn new things. all of the old coaches have no since retired. and so have the players that were the great in the game. Pete Sampras has now retired and he was a great in the game. Andre Agassi used to be another great then it seemed after he got married and had kids he was slipping.

andy roddick used to be really good but he has gone though so many coaches its just insane.

Because its tennis. Its another sport no citizen born in the United States really cares about (just like soccer). If its not football or basketball and you're in the USA...forget about it. No one is really that interested. An incredibly small following.
