Most likely it's that he is sexually repressed, possibly from being abused as a child. There is also a good chance that his religious fanaticism stems from his inability to form logical and coherent thoughts. As a result his ignorance and superstitious mindset cause him to lash out in sexual frustration at anyone who presents an opinion that does not fit into his shallow world view.
It is apparent, that despite his attempt at fitting in by playing at heterosexual ,that his deep seeded homosexuality manifests itself in irrational and childish outburst towards the objects of his affection.
If left untreated the subject may succumb to depression and anxiety. These may result in attempts at getting attention, such as suicide attempts or subconsciously allowing himself to be caught in the act during a homosexual act.
