Everyone here has good input. Consider using your instincts to guide your final decision. If you LOVE cars, work on cars. If you LOVE jets, work on jets. Job markets will always fluctuate, in the end you should love what you do.

While being an aircraft mechanic definitely offers better money & benifits it does have limits to job availabilty, and security. The aircraft market is somewhat unstable, creating a somewhat unsteady need for mechanics. When it's good, the sky's the limit when it comes to money, but when it's bad it can get ugly. I agree the best school is definately the Air Force. I don't know much about the other two, but a Diesel mechanic seems to be getting to be a popular occupation. Do what your heart tells you, and find a way to make it a good career. If you hate what you do, you won't make money with it, you won't make a career out of it, and you won't be happy.

I am not in the military, but shouldn't you be able to try out any of these proffessions in the military?

Good luck,
Wayne

Aircraft Mechanic

as an A+P licensed aircraft mechanic, and a state certified auto and diesel mechanic, i think that peoples on this site that have no idea what they are talking about. i went to school with a navy guy and a marine that had as much as 20 years of experience working on aircraft. yet they still had to go through the same training that i did, never working on one. not to mention the cost of school (18,000 and that was 12 years ago)

as a master prototype mechanic, working on pre-production and prototype Chrysler products, (including diesels) i would have to tell you I've made a good living doing this. on the other side..... the auto industry is doing extremely poor right now. and doesn't look like its going to change much in the next 3-5 years.

I'd go with aircraft as the auto business is flat rate mainly (commision per job not hourly) .. The Diesel mechanic has to go into all kind of holes for motors but usaully is hourly and pretty fast to learn...

The aircraft after certification may mean having to move somewheres you don't want but with so few techs in that field... I'd go with the aircraft (even though I'm a auto mechanic I am saying this... Thought about trying to learn helicopters but too much money and too little free time to learn it)

aircraft mechanic money is better you dont compete with as many people, (everyone can work on cars) and if you get a job with an airline your able to retire from that. not a local garage.
