Depends how you use it.
If you only use it to access the net you should be OK. Chances are you never get caught. If you get caugt you get a fine most likely.

Mess around with somebodies files you are actually doing post fraud and can cost you up to 6 months per. That's per opened file!!

Many states now have laws making it illegal to use another person's wireless access without permission. It is kind of like stealing cable T.V. however the penalties are usually more severe. I would use caution and talk with a neighbor about sharing the cost and/or helping with encryption.

It depends in large part on the intention of the person with the wifi connection.

If they just don't know how to configure it to be a closed network and would like for it to be so, then they may object to your use of it and it may be considered a crime (though laws are still vague on this and court rulings are limited).

If they intend for it to be open and shared, then you are doing nothing wrong.

In any case, if you choose to connect to an open wifi point, just please be courteous. Don't engage in activities that reduce the performance of their connection. Don't attempt peer-to-peer filesharing (they might get blamed for your activities).

In other words, be a good neighbor!

if it was near me , i would try and find the wireless network and either help the person to make it secure , as i have 2 in my house and have it 128 bit web protected which is easy to set up.

See if your apartment has a free wireless internet connection, and if so, then log on to that one. Or maybe if you are low on cash, offer to share it with a neighbor. But if you dont care about them, then your choice!.lol

Could be considered theft in law especially if the person you are linking to has a capped service and has to pay if they go over a limit

If they're ignorant enough not to implement the security measures of their router then I say exploit them.

Unless of course it is by their design that they want to lure you onto their network.

It's illegal!

It's sort of stupid on their part. In a few key strokes they can protect their network. However, that's not the point. You are using something that you are not paying for....that's stealing.....period.

It's illegal to do it, yet people do it all the time. If your neighbours don't protect their wireless, it's kinda their own fault.
Just don't tell anybody you're doing it.
