Any combination works. When my son had his 15th birthday party recently we bought a bunch of 2-liter diet cokes and a couple of boxes of Mentos. Roll up a tube of paper so the inside is about the size of the opening on the coke - this is so you can stack up 5 or 6 mentos in the tube. Put a piece of paper on the bottom, put in the mentos, then hold the tube over the opening and yank out the paper, letting the mentos fall into the coke. 5 or 6 tabs gets you to about 12-16 feet. You can also drill a 1/4 inch hole in the top, then tape some mentos to a paper clip that you hang inside the drilled cap. Screw the cap back on (outside and carefully), then drop the paper clip with the mentos into the coke. THAT one can go as high as 30 feet. Alll fun stuff.

The film that I saw consisted of wrapping the mentos in tape so that they did not contact the Coke until the bottle was slammed on the ground. Only a small portion of the rockets actually flew.
You would need some way to prevent mixing of the Mentos and Coke until you are ready. This would have to work when the bottle was upside down.

Bottles work best because of the spout. You can rig them up with the mentos in the lid, slightly put the lid on then slam the bottle on the ground and watch it take off like a rocket. Search google for it, there are websites out there that describe how to do it.

Um.. chemistry says that if you have a mass of mentos, and a mass of coke, then the reaction will occur until one mass is consumed entirely.
