When I worked with kids in a troubled school we would do what we called "Sociograms" and look at who was talking with whom and who was off by themselves alone, etc. You can learn a lot by just standing back and observing.

Their personalities, their way of talking, their relationship with each other..... then move on to .... their common personalities, way of talking and feelings ... then move on to .... their different personalities, way of talking and tone. I know thesethings may sound like a lot, but when it happens in my head, it happens really really fast. Who knows? Brain is a mystery :]

the people that stand out. They are the ones in the bright colors, maybe outgoing, more flamboyant, their looks (good or bad), age (young/old).
