France played better, hands down...Italian fans can't say any different. France deserved to win, if only because they got through into the finals not by bad calls, but by sheer desire and skill...
Italy had a controversial tie against the US, who still kept up even while being down two, and then a Uber-(in the spirit of germany)Controversial ending with Australia, only to let Zidane win the Final for them. Italy was a good team...don't get me wrong...but France was better, hands down.
Just look at the actual finale...
Italy was playing a man up...they had an advantage because of that headbutt...but you couldn't tell by looking at em...they only had two or three attackers when they had the ball, while the rest of the team lagged in the backfield, walking towards the ball...

Henry played with a head injury (he didn't look the same after that vicious hit within the first 10 minute...his own fault, but still) you have to admire him even going as long as he did.
and even with zidane hurt and the team winded, France played right until the end - Never say die - while Italy seemed too pooped to care...
no, my friends...France deserved to win this world cup...
I feel, while Italy was quite capable of winning on their own, they really didn't even ADVANCE on their own...
and Buffon was touted as a hero in the PK shoot outs...when he didn't have a single block...in fact he dove wrong on all of them.
Italy may have won the cup, but they definitely, in my opinion, were a far cry from EARNING it.
and i don't even LIKE france all that much...
i had my heart set on Argentina- Brazil....hoo boy what a match up THAT would have been...
still though, antics and controversies aside, this finale was still one worth watching...

Italy should have won which is why they did. I agree France looked stronger, but they didn't score any additional goals which was of course more important than looking good.
All these "yeah buts..." are sort of interesting, but they won't be engraved on the cup itself, and they'll be forgotten just like the fact that Brazil outplayed Uruguay (assuming that's true) in 1950 has been. 2006 champion = Italy, period.

I've never in my life had seen a soccer game ever until a few weeks ago I watched the game with England (not sure who they played). But I saw when David Beckham kicked a goal in and won the game for England. So I decided I wanted to watch the world cup because of the intensity that the rest of the world seemed to be in over this game.
I was rooting for Italy, not for any other reason other than I loved the country when I went to visit it.
Both teams looked good, but I was definatley rooting for Italy once that Zidane guy head butted the italian. That's just a dirty play on his part, poor sportsmanship!

I totally agree. France pretty much totally dominated after half time. Italy wasn't attacking, they were just walking, and when the actually got the ball they lost after a few seconds. Their passing was awful too.
France was playing great, and even after someof their best players were out, they continued playing well and didn't give up. Even when playing with 10 men, they still dominated.

i understand that in a way that they did play better but the only point they got was a bad call by the ref. so they should of never gotten it and the 2nd goal by the italians wasnt an offsides like they said so it should of been 2-0 not 1-1. so the italians should of won.

But anyway the winners played all the matches, and did not loose one. Furthe more they showed they are the best team this year.
Just winning one match after the other, is pure proof they were the best!
