What about Miracle: A Celebration of New Life by Anne Geddes. I don't know if the book is so much about babies...as it is starring babies. But the photos alone would make it a cute and sentimental gift.

Babies love to look at faces of other babies, and based on this researched fact, there are tons of board books (the kind with the cardboard pages) of babies and baby faces. Maybe the new mother would like a few board books to read to her infant? You can pretty much go to any bookstore and find a big selection, so I'm not going to recommend specific ones here :-)

This is a wonderful book for a new mother: 'Operating Instructions' by Anne Lamotte -- a journal of her son's first year. It's a very small book.

Two EXCELLENT picture books for mothers of 2nd (or next) babies are My Big Brother and My Big Sister by Valorie Fisher. They feature large, clear pictures of the big boy and big girl, and I can't read the big boy one without crying. :)
