according to one theory, the universe goes through cycles, starting at a "big bang" and ending at one. the universe then constantly expand in a spherical shape until it reaches a point at with it begins to shrink. It then will shrink down to avery small size whicxh will produce another big bang and the process will start over again.

In the beginning, all the Universe squeezed into unimaginably small, hot, dense ball. The Big Bang was when this suddenly beganswell explosively, allowing first energy and matter, then atoms, gas clouds, and galaxies to form. The Universe have been swelling ever since.
We know that the Universe is getting bigger at a certain rate by observing how fast distant galaxies are moving. By working out how long it took everything to expand to where it is now, we can wind the clock back to the time when the Universe was very, verysmall indeed. This suggests that the Universe is between 10 to 20 billion years old. However, some stars are older than this.
We can tell the Universe getting because every galaxie is speeding away from us. Yet the galaxies themselves are not moving-the space in between them is stretching.

Bits and pieces of whats going on have been mentioned...
The universe itself IS expanding, the balloon example was a good one. Think of points on a ballon as galaxies and the surface of the balloon as the fabric of spacetime.
Recent stellar data has shown that the expansion of the universe is actually accelerating. This implies a force is being exherted on the universe which has yet to be discovered. If you search for "dark energy" or "cosmological constant" you will find more in depth info on current research in this field (cosmology).

The statement "universe is expanding" is a misstatement. What it means is the galaxies are moving away from each other. The balloon example is small experiment to show how the galaxies move away from each other. This is an observable fact. Universe doesn't have any boundaries and hence no expansion or shrinkage

The universe is infinite. It difficult to quantify it as having a beginning and an end point.
Given the theories of physics, we can speculate that the universe was not created, it just existed much like the movement of the Mobius Strip.

The current theory is that the universe is like the surface of an inflatable ball. So, as you pump more air into the ball, the ball's radius increases and the surface area of the ball increases. This is what's going on with the universe.

The universe is constantly exspanding due to the speed of light theroy. in fact it is exspanding at 186000 miles per second. But it is unexplained where it is heading.
