We air putting in an air conditioner that does not fit the window. We need to know what to plug the hole with. What will stop the air better, foam, or wood.

I just answered the same question elsewhere.

Most of the big hardware stores sell trim that is already finished. You can easily cut it to size and then block any gaps with chaulk or spray foam.

I would fill in the sides with wood, then, put a foam boarder around there, (providing its a large space, and not a space of an inch or less).

Get some foam, (either the stick on type, to force between the board and window frame, or the door type that will be stapled around the board, to ensure that air will not get into the cracks).

I would put this on the inside and out to ensure a "snug" fit.

I wish you well..

Use wood, you can cut it to fit, stick it in without breaking it, and caulk sticks to it better.
