From my observation it has to do with humidity. I tend to see more fireflies after a rain or when the grass is wetter. Also, if memory serves, the females stay in the grass and the males light and dip to show off, so maybe the females only come out during wetter times and the males don't bother unless the females are present.

i heard they only live 24hr. i also heard the light is for matting reasons. hey, if they only live24 hr and mate, how does the baby thing work? dntknw

They are there, you just don't see them.
