A tattoo is very permanent so unless you're certain of what you want to get, you shouldn't get one at all. Don't be one of those people who go into a tattoo shop and pick a picture off the wall to put on their body. Wait to get one until you come up with something that is special to you and then go crazy!

If you are really sure you want to get one, make it memorable and meaningful, whether it is big, medium, or small. Don't get it because everyone around you has one, get it for you. I got my first at age 29 and haven't looked back since. Whatever you like or are in to, make it the inspiration, the source for your very first and subsequent tattoos. I already have 8 and am getting ready to add a few more. Best of luck!

I wrestled and wrestled with what to get for my first tattoo.... searching for that ONE special design..... for months..... then one night on the spur of the moment I decided 'what the hell?' for my FIRST tattoo, I'll just go with something smallish and simple, and I got a cool blue star on my wrist. I figure I got the rest of my life to find or design the ONE special, meaningful design. I just wanted to get a tattoo already and get the ball rolling, know what I mean? so, I thought a star was a good way to go. I've always loved stars....

Skip all the cartoon characters: taz, pooh, etc. Do a little research into a subject that is interesting to you. Find a symbol that has meaning for your life or that represents an experience that changed you in some way.
(Also, skip people's names. Except your mom. A "Mom" tattoo might be the only one she'll love. : ))

I agree with your first answer, something small. Also, what will it look like when you're 60 years old? Will you regret it? Think about this long and hard before you get a tattoo. Best of luck to you...........

If you're not sure what to get and have to ask us for ideas then don't get one!!! Only get a tattoo if you have decided what it will be and you are certain that you want it.

Make it something that has meaning to you & that you will not regret when you are like 75 years old. I have a 2" big one of a rose w/ a couple petals falling from it. The meaning? My name is Rose.
