I noticed a lot of women go to great lengths to make sure their make up/hair/nails are well put together but their children look like they haven't seen a brush since birth. Also their nails look like they've been digging out of a grave since birth. Can anyone tell me why?

I happen to be a mother of one little girl and people are shocked sometimes that her hair, nails and outfits are well put together, but to me that's the way its supposed to be. My mom always had my sister and I clean. Its a mommy's job.

Maybe those women are too self absorbed, and their children get zero attention.

I don't know and I think it's sad. I have an 18-month-old daughter who is always extremely well-dressed, hair brushed, bathed daily if not twice a day, spotless, nails are trimmed, shoes are clean, we wash our hands together and I bring anti-bacterial gel when we can't. Most of the time, my daughter looks better than I do and I hope people aren't saying that I need to take better care of myself (I'm always clean not just fancy, sometimes I only have a ponytail and little make-up). I take great pride in my daughter looking good because I know it will be important too when she's older for her self esteem and I just like her looking cute. This is a good question.

My mother taught me a lot about hygiene but never told me how to appear "feminine" or "womanly." I had to learn those on my own and didn't pick-up the whole swing of things (make-up, hair, nails, etc.) until I was 20. Sure, while growing up I knew to brush my teeth, wash my hair... but I didn't know anything about a pleasing appearance.

I guess some of it just has to do with how much the mother knows as well. Even today, my mother never uses make-up or tries to style her hair. I always thought it was because she was a traditional Japanese woman but I think it has to do with old standards of appearance versus new ones.

I have to say that I agree with you 100%. I have seen young women who are dressed very well, not a hair out of place, make-up on, and nails polished; holding onto children who to me look like orphans. Dirty, un-brushed hair, dirty clothes. I don't understand it, it just wasn't that way when I was growing up, even if there were seven or eight children in the family. They were cleaned up before going anywhere.

Depends on the age of the child. Children are often taught the proper ways in life and at about age 13 abandon all that is normal. They resume being tolerable at about age 17. And why is it only women's responsibility to teach hygiene? Are men exempt?

Thank You for saying something about that! That is my biggest pet peeve!

There's nothing worse then seeing a parent who looks good and
well put together and then you see their child looking like a "rag doll"!

Or a parent spending money on JUNK while their kid is in tore up clothes. And their shoes are falling apart. If they don't have the money to buy new stuff for the their child then they don't have money to buy junk.

not really,I feel like my daughters reflect me as a mother...so,I look good, smell good...so do my girls...and if I notice something,I explain to my child that a girl's ALWAYS supposed to be clean...
not all mom's are like what your referring to...
my oldest is 7 and if a lesson needs repeating,we do it...
if she misses a spot on say, brushing her teeth,I get the tooth brush and do it myself, then tell her"see, this is how you do it"
we get pedicures together, hair cuts and go to the beauty supply store...I teach her feminine things and hygiene...tell her about when she will wear makeup,to keep it natural...

Can't tell you why...but I hate that. I guess those women are more concerned with making themselves look cute than to worry about the well-being of the child they brought into the world.

I wish I knew. Don't they know that when people see a dirty, nasty little kid they immediately judge the parents. Some people really should be sterilized they treat parenting like a sentence and not like a blessing.

BECAUSE THE MOTHERS WERE NOT TAUGHT GOOD HYGIENE. OR THE KIDS ARE DIRTY BUT THE MOTHERS ARE SHARP AS A TACK.
