I am a TA and love working in the classroom. I am interested in the Graduate Teacher Programme. Some of the teachers I've TA'd for have said I should think about becoming a teacher and I was wondering if anyone had used this path to get QTS and if they had any advice for me.

Many people I know have gotten teaching degrees while being a TA. It's a great way to go and it gives you the time to go to school and do HW as well as practical experience w/children. Go for it and enjoy. I teach and it's a fantastic job.

You need to understand that being a TA in college is completely different from teaching kids from K-12. Also being a TA with a teacher in a K-12 classroom is completely different than when you have your own classroom.

My best advice is to work as a substitute teacher part-time while you are still taking classes. You get an idea of how kids respond to you. The best part about being a substitute is that if you mess up, you don't see the kids again, and move on to a new class the next time. So you have a lot of room to change and improve your techniques to see what works for you. Also, you get paid for substitute teaching. Good luck.
