Just seems like it'd be a waste of time. Lots in the world to rescue. But maybe I forget it's just a story. Maybe he wanted to see how loving Lois Lane was to a non-superhero?

In the original comic serial, Superman wasn't quite the character that he is today. His only power was super-strength and he was actually much more fallible. There was no heat vision, he couldn't fly, etc.

Created during the Great Depression and developed during WWII, much of the comic's focus was on Clark Kent who was an "everyman" immigrant from another planet who could do extraordinary things. This message was very positive for an American public that was facing truly scary times and desperately needed "Average Joe's" to step up and be heroes. After a decisive victory in WWII and during an economic boom, Superman's characteristics changed to mirror the U.S.'s emerging superpower status and he was given more powers and became virtually indestructible. Most of these new powers were invented by the creators of the Superman radio program and then implemented in the comic books afterwords. As time went by, there was a significant shift from plot development to action sequences.

Your views are shared by many as evidenced by serials such as the Justice League Unlimited cartoon where there is little or no visibility of the true identities of the characters. In the comic books and the movies, though, using the alternate identity allows a deeper character study and various subplots.

I think so he could live a normal life at least a part of the time. Can you imagine walking into a grocery store and people asking you for an autograph when all you're trying to do is buy milk? At least with Clark Kent, people would leave him alone some of the time.

He doesn't pretend to be Clark Kent, he is Clark Kent, besides he has to have a secret identity so people don't figure him out. He only shows up when it is convient. He knows when he is needed.

What I want to know is how stupid does Lois have to be not to recognize him????
