I was chatting with someone on the computer and he is 17 and im 14 but he lives in the united kingdom but he asked me to be his pen pal saying that he can't wait for me to write him. If I had to ask my parents they might say no but over there at 17 its common to move out so he lives on his own and works as a semi pro soccer coach. do you think its ok to write him?

Always remember that you only know what the person tells you about themself. For all you know, he's much older and looking for young girls. Do not give out any personal information under any circumstances.

For example, how do you know it's common to move out at 17 in the UK? If he told you that, you don't know it's true. Personally, I would have a hard time believing that a 17 year old has a job as a semi pro soccer coach. This could be a clue that he's older.

So, if I tell you that I am 21 years old and studying for my master's degree at UCLA, can you be sure? Well, I'm actually old enough to have four grandkids, and the oldest of them is almost 21. You can even hide your actual location in IM.

I think you do need to tell your parents and see what they think. Just please be very careful about this...

You should discuss this with your parents. They'll be happy to see that you care about their opinion. They know you well so can can tell if something goes wrong. They're so many dangerous people surfing the net. That 17 y-old can actually be a disgusting old man fantasizing on your answers. He might get you into things you don't really want to do. As a mother, I am giving you this advice: Please be careful. Talk to an adult that you trust about this encounter.

I think it is fine, but be careful. Just be mindful of his responses and make sure it is for merely for a friendship and nothing more.
