My stepgaughter has all of a sudden developed an intolerance to dairy products. Is this something that might go away? I always thought that one was born with this problem

Actually it is very common. Our bodies produce lactase to help us digest milk, however after a certain age we stop producing it. Some people continue into adulthood producing this enzyme (I think it is an anzyme), and pig out on all sorts of ice-cream and so on with no problem.

No worries though, adults do not need milk to survive. They need calcium and so on but there are many other good sources of calcium around. One trick is to cook a turkey carcass, add a small amount of vinegar while cooking it and it will pull the calcium out of the bones. Great soup base. Tums also have calcium in them.

Good luck.

Depending on her symptoms she might also have irritable bowl or something similar to that and it may be dairy that sets it off or depending on her age she might have become lactose intolerant I formed a allergy to carrots when I was 10 I have severe allergies and that didn't happen until I was 8. So I know that you can form a allergy to something when you are older you aren't really born with allergies and that's basically what lactose intolerant is.
So she can either stay away from dairy or go talk to a Dr and see what the Dr says.

Suzy most people become lactose intolerant later in life. The body stops developing the enzyme that breaks down the sugar lactose, which is found in most dairy products.

The people who do NOT develop the intolerance usually have dairy farming in their family histories.

You can be born with it or develop it later in life. Techincally, the body isn't really set up to drink the breast milk of another animals, especially into adulthood, and so a good portion of people find themselves having difficulty from it. But cheese. Mmmmmm.

She should be able to control it by taking Lactaid or something similar and with experimentation she'll know what specifically her triggers are and can plan accordingly.
