Because Geronimo was a POW at FT Sill and the legend is that he jump off Medicine Bluff, horse and all to escape the Cavalry. There was an old movie made about Geronimo that showed this, and a bunch of Paratroopers during World War 2 seen it, so when they jumped out of the planes they yelled Geronimo..And it stuck

Its from when the military first started testing parachutes.

The testers found that when you first jump from a plane, some people may black out and go unconscious for a little while. Thats very dangerous. But they also found that if you yell loudly when you jump, you dont black out.
They wanted to yell something they would all recognize, so you could tell if it was really someone in trouble, or just a normal jump. The movie "Geronimo" had been playing at the base movie theater, so they picked that. It stuck.

Kiteynmee got it right. When parachutes were first introduced, you were not supposed to pull your ripcord that opens the chute just as you jumped, the chute (they thought) might get caught on the tail or rudder of the aircraft. So if you waited to pull the ripcord long enough to slowly say Geronimo, the airplane would be far enough away not to present a hazard.

In 1940, the night before their first mass jump, U.S. paratroopers at Fort Benning saw a film about Geronimo, and began shouting his name during jumps, a trend which has caught on elsewhere.

That's if you delilberately jump from a high place -- not if you accidentally fall.

But as for why people yell "Geronimo!" when they jump from a high place, I have no idea.
