I work at Wal-Mart, and am aware that, although they bring a variety of products and services to an otherwise under-represented class of persons their policies and practices are destroying local economies and are likely damaging to the larger American socio-political economic system.
Is there something unethical or contradictory in working there over the summer to pay for my liberal (often anti-WalMart) education during the school year?

I worked at Wal-Mart for 3 years, talk about selling your soul for a paycheck. Their friendly attitude and commercials don't cover the fact that they are awful to their employees (hence the tons of lawsuits from ex-employees), they run smaller companies out of business (although they are now giving them small grants to "help" them stay in business), and they are just evil in general. The way I look at it though, is that if you are just working there over the summer you are fine, if you stay any longer you're in trouble. Ever get the "we're family" speech from one of those lifers that has been there over 10 years? It's cause they are sucked into a hole and they want everyone else to be miserable too. Good luck, and if they tell you to do the cheer a good out is that you have to go use the can.....

First of all, you need to stop listening to the crap you are being force-fed about "their policies and practices are destroying local economies and are likely damaging to the larger American socio-political economic system."

Wal-Mart operates in a free-market economy and they are successful by giving people what they want and doing it bigger and cheaper.

There is a Darwin-esque nature to Capitalism, that is Survival of the Fittest and that is all of the goodness that Nature has to offer distilled into a simple economy. If you can't compete with Wal-Mart and go out of business, oh well, you didn't have enough customers to survive. That's the people VOTING with their dollars. Pure and beautiful!

Those that would mess with such a pure and simple Natural system want to artificially control things in a very artificial way and are evil-doers. They are arrogant enough to think they know better.

Does Wal-Mart need to be careful what it does with it's immense size and power? Do they need to treat workers fairly? Do they need to be more socially conscious and responsible?

You bet they do! And these changes are better brought on by public awareness and perception than by some new laws we don't need.

Be proud of your job at Wal-Mart, learn how democracy and capitalism really works and really does help the common man who is willing to help himself. Participate in your company's social and educational programs. Go tell your boss you want to volunteer to help your community and they will be proud of you and so will we.

Do you truly believe that their policies and practices are destructive? If so, then it is indeed unethical for you to be working there. It would be kind of like working for IG Farben in 1940s Germany...

However, if you have doubts that the Wal Mart effect is harmful, perhaps working there will help you make up your mind.

it deepens on how you personally feel about the way wal-mart goes about doing business with in the America and abroad. I can understand that you may have loyalties to the company, but on the other hand wal- mart has put a lot of American companies out of business because of their strong arm tactic ks, ultimately it is up to you to make that choice.

You could also look at it with the attitude that you can use the money they give you now to fight them later....

My wife calls it "hell-mart"....

Not at all. we live in a country where you could choose to work where you want to work without fear of what other people may think of you. Work where you want, as long as you are treated fairly and are making what you want to make.
