It seems like a lot of comics come out in individual issues and then get collected up into a trade paperback/graphic novel at around the same price. Which would you buy if the sum of the individual issues were significantly less than the cost of the collection? Why?

i would go with the indiv. issues

graphic novels are a sham. they're just products at a higher price point. A Lexus with a Toyota Camry engine.

Well. I usually buy the individual issues as they come out, so as to keep up with the storyline ASAP. I often buy the collected to loan, so as not to endanger my collection of originals. Some people buy the collected edition so as to be able to trade or sell their original issues. Some people buy only the collected edition because somehow they can stand to wait (huh...I don't get it...)

The collected editions do have the advantage of being more durable and requiring less fanatic care to replace them in pristine condition.

(OK, OK...I've been known to re-read my collected editions when my originals were in storage, or not yet all in the same box...face it folks, after 5,000 comics, it's a small chore to mix the newest 50 or 60 into the alphabetic mix...5,000 comics was a while back.)

Individual issues because I like to see the different covers and can place all the covers in a whole row. Imagine not being able to do that with Ross' covers for Earth X, Universe X and Paradise X!!!

Individual issues.

1) They would be cheaper.

2) As collectors items, the individual comic books are much more valuable. They are rarer and are the first publications.

and most importantly

3) They are cooler.

I'd buy whatever's cheapest on ebay. I refuse to pay more for less: that's like how McDonalds has 4 chicken nuggets on the dollar menu... but a six chicken nugget meal costs well over 2 dollars! BWAAAAAAAAAAAA! You save 40 cents by buying 5 4 pieces instead of a 20 piece. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?!

If I'm just after the story or the art (or just curious about a certain title), I grab a tradepaperback and if you prefer to have them nicely stacked on a bookshelf, go get a hardbounded copy ... But If I really want something for keeps, something I would want to value later on - I grab an individual issue and probably have it graded as well. (sometimes regardless of the price)

If you're going to bag and collect them, do the individual issues (if they're in good shape, and make sure they are 1st editions!)

If you want to re-read the story, go w/ the TPB/GN. All the material is collected together for one quick read. Sometimes you get writers commentary as well.

Although the hardback Marvel Masterworks seem to command a pretty penny on ebay.

I mostly do the TPBs w/ ebay, b/c me and my kids are going to read them. I'm not looking to keep things in mint condition.

Individual issues. they go up more in value and it brings back the classic feel of having to wait a month to find out what happens
