I am trying to statistically normalize a behavioral dataset so that variables from different participants have the same minimum and maximum point. i.e. responces from different participants can have the same minimum and maximum variable. I tried logarithms but they dont work with negative values. Normalization such as standard deviation does not work either. What is the formula for my problem how can I do that?

I'm not entirely sure I'm reading your question properly, but if I am my solution might be useful.

It seems to me that what you would want to do is standardize each score in the following manner. Find the range for participant A. I will say -4 to 14 as an example. The range here is 18. For all responses of participant A, change the score as follows:

(score - min) / range
For a score 6, you would use (6- (-4)) / 18 = .55555...

By standardizing all the scores for each participant in this manner, you will have scores standardized that go from 0 to 1. These are basically the percentage scores for each scenario along a participant's range and are independent of the range of scores a particular participant gave.
