The old TV sets with dials didn't even list channel 1...they showed only 2-13 on VHF.

Channel 1 was elimated (1940) because of frequency assignments with FM radio. No TV station used this broadcast frequency (because it's been renamed) and although your cable provider might decide to include a channel 1 on their cable box it's still not really broadcast as channel 1. After the FCC eliminated channel 1 they later repositioned fm radio allocations to a different frequency bracket & instead of adding channel 1 they moved channel 2 down into the frequency range that was formerly channel 1.

That's not true. Channel 1 is used in New York City.

Channel 1 is used in America. Of course, it's not used everywhere, but don't make generalizations on something that you don't know what you're talking about.

Channel allocations were changed in 1948 and Channel 1 (44-50MHz) was assigned to fixed and mobile radio services such as ambulance dispatch, other emergency services, and amateur radio.

I dunno about that Natasha girl. I live in Minnesota, and we don't use channel one. The lowest we have is the public broadcasting station, channel 3. That really is a damn good question. Let me know if you find out why.
