It will make a loud humming sound at any time. It has done this 3 times in the last wk. Turning off the p c and waiting a few minutes corrects the noise. I have vacuumed the back vent grills to see if that will help. If this continues , will I have to replace the fan and battery pack?

If the fan is in the power supply, you're probably better off just replacing the entire power supply rather than just the fan inside. They're not intended to be worked on by the end user.

It's not a big deal to do. Find yourself a replacement, and then just unscrew and remove the old, put in the new one, plug everything back in.

fans are relatively easy. whether it's a desktop or tower model, all you would need to do is remove the access panel (if it's a tower) or remove the outer shell (if it's a desktop) and locate the fan unit. nearly all fan units are screwed in using 3 or 4 screws. simple phillips screwdriver willl work. unscrew the fan from the housing and remove. find the power cord attached to the fan and remove it from the power supply cords. you don't need to replace the power unit/battery pack either. if your computer wasn't turning on at all, then you need to do it. but for a simple fan there's no need to replace the power supply. once you have the fan out find a fan (if you haven't already) equal in its original size and simply reverse the process and your ready to go

Unscrew the mounting screws that hold the fan to the case and unhook the wires. Install the new one. Battery pack should be ok.
