I work for a small construction business. My boyfriend's family owns it and he also works here (he is expected to take it over soon). (He and I have a future planned together). I started in January of this year. I make ok money but need to be making more. Bottom line - I work my as* off for them. I work from 6:30 am to 5 pm M-F. I have taken over almost all of the office responsibilites. I have been expecting to be "promoted" and make more money since when i was hired i was told that i would be assisting my bf running the company one day. Now - they are bringing in a General Manager and being sneaky about it. I feel like I have alot to offer a company - i have a good business sense. Why are they doing this? I basically am the General Manager - so why are they getting someone else to do it after all i have learned and already know? What do I do? I am very upset about this......

maybe ask them why they're bringing in a general manager and assure them that you are able to do the work (unless you do need the extra help). i would say to talk to them to find out what position you have there. if not, just find another job that pays more and come bak maybe when your bf takes over.

they may feel like your relationship may get in the way of you working lord forbid you guys break up your not married but if you feel that strong about it bring it to your man first you should always do this so he knows you are not going over him so see how he feels about it and what his reasons are if he supports you which he should then you both need to go and find out the issue or if you don't want to put your man in the middle of it let him know how you feel then go to your boss/owner to find out the problem.
if you feel he is bull s'ing you then he probably is but you are kind of between a rock and hard place because it is your mans soon to be business and hopefully your you do not want to put a bad impression on the family

so you have a choice you can suck it up because you know you will own it eventually and just ask for a raise or jeopardize that to be general manager or potentially fired but at least you will have the experience to work some where else another is go ahead work some where else you will have the company soon but until then you do need the money

i might sound confusing but i did at least lay out the choices.

A promotion after only 7 months? Do you have any previous experience in construction management? Did your boyfriend have any say in the hiring of the new GM? This is their bread and butter and they have to do what they feel is best for the business. Being the girlfriend of the owner's son doesn't make any difference. Just keep doing what you are doing. Eventually they will see that you are qualified for a promotion. Good luck to you.

Tell them how you feel. I like the first answer too, go in there with your resume and tell them you want to be the General Manager. If they truly trust you to help run the company and want to turn it over to thier son in the future they will give you the chance to prove yourself now. Maybe they don't know you want the job.....or maybe they don't feel your ready for the job?

Can't you just have a calm conversation with them? Tell them you're concerned about your future, your career? Ask them where they see you in the company in a year, or two or three.

They may not see you as a "regular" employee. They may see you as their son's girlfriend. And they may not know you're serious. Maybe they think you're just there cuz he's there. Let them know that you're serious and that you want to be GM.

Be upfront, sincere, and honest. They'll appreciate it. And they probably have no idea you feel the way you do.
