There were a lot of things that I thought were valuable. The ones that I remember making the most difference in day to day life were:

1. A hotpot or something to make oodles of noodles quickly.
2. Something to lean on in bed to study...like a back rest.
3. Crates or something that creates shelves for storing things. This is also a way to decorate. Dorm rooms get really crowded fast. Organization is so helpful.
4. A good lock and a box to keep things in. Someone always finds your stuff...and sometimes you don't want it found. Prevention is the best form of protection.

Hope that helps. There were lots of things I think are important...really just depends on what you plan to do with your time.

Toilet Paper. Not the stuff that they use in the dorms, some good stuff. You will thank your self later. Also, foam pads for your bed are good. I just got one last year and it is so much nicer.

A computer is up there. Most places have labs, but if you are lazy like me, having one in your room is very nice.

my favorite stuffed animal. i felt like i was too old to have it, but after a little while you realize you aren't and it makes a good bed decoration. if you're a guy you're new college gf will love it...it'll show that you're sensitive and she'll probably take it from you too.
easier than parting with your favorite T-shirt, which we girls also take.

a mini fridge, lock box, lots of shelving/storage

- most important, a sense of humor - you will find yourself in the midst of absurd/insane/just plain weird situations, and humor helps keep your perspective on it all.
