I have a manufactured home with forced air heat. There is a smell under the house and it is coming through the heater vents. Smells like something died. Also there is a small water leak under the house, could this be causing the smell?

I'd be interested to know the source of the water leak. Is it coming from waste or fresh water?

Typically, manufactured homes have a "package" unit, or condenser and evaporator coil in a combined unit located outside. I find this to often be a contaminated environment as air leaks cause the unit to drag in outside fungi, which enjoys prolific growth in the moist, aerated environment inside the unit. (And it can smell like something died)

Beyond that, I have pulled dead animals out of ductwork under manufactured homes. Sometimes they crawl through a tear in the duct looking for food or water, or to cool off.

Your best bet is to find an a/c company that is willing to address your ductwork and mold issues. That can be tough. Most want to sell equipment and avoid the "nasty" work required to get you squared away. But if you look diligently, I'll bet you'll find a company that will treat you fair and square. Good luck!

Its not a dead rodent unless it chewed into your duct work and then died. The duct work is 95+% air tight if put together right. The likely cause of your smell is mildew in the duct work caused by it hanging down to the ground and getting wet or your water leak getting it wet. Pull the side panels away from your trailer and look. You can get duct work at Home Depot or Lowes to replace the section that is bad. Then leave the panels off the side of your trailer for a few days to dry out the area after you fix the water leak too.

Could be stagnant water, or it could be a dead animal. They have been known to crawl inside the ventwork in a home and die. Just be glad it isn't inside a wall...

You can call someone out to have your heating unit and vent work inspected. It never hurts to have that done once every year or two anyway to make sure it's all working properly.
