Depending on the species, most female turtles have a "V" shape in their shells near their tail. Check online or in a book to determine the species of turtle. Most references will have photos or descriptions that will help you decide the gender.

Usually the male is brighter colored, the tail is fatter because it carries his reproductive organs, and there is a notch in his plasteron (sp) (bottom shell) under the tail to facilitate moving his "equipment' down to the females private area after mounting her. The fore claws are longer on a male to help control the female during this process..
I have seen a pair of box turtles attempt this several times, but Mrs. Turtle said no and closed her rear hinge of her shell on Mr. Turtles rear legs. It had to hurt!

In a lot of turtles the males have a lot longer claws than the females do(for holding on to the females shell while mating)..this would probably be the easiest way to tell(depending of course on what kind of turtle you have).

What kind of turtle is it? In red eared sliders the males have VERY long claws... In general females get bigger, have short stubby tails, and a flat plastron (bottom part of the shell), while males have longer tails and an indented plastron (so they don't fall off while mating). There are other ways to tell that can vary from species to species... If it's still young it's virtually impossible to tell.

Put your finger right where the turtle head comes out. If it bites, it is probably a female.

Males have longer nails than females, and the bottom shells of females are somewhat concave for their eggs.
