Wow, in my opinion, your parents are responsible for taking care of you, giving you clothes, etc. You're mother is way out of line. My father always used to say...once you're grown up, you're grown up..you spend most of your life working..so enjoy being a kid while you can. None of us (6 kids) were allowed to work until we were older, 16 or so, if we wanted to. We weren't rich by any means, dad just knew that childhood should be enjoyed, because of all the time you devote to work later on.
My son is your age, he will be 14 on August 5th. His dad (who lives 5000 miles away, and whom my son just move with) insists he works. I disagree. Having the spending money is good and fine, but when it comes down to it, your parents are responsible for giving you what you need until you are old enough to support yourself.
I just agree with my dad, you're an adult a long time...and a kid a very, very short time. I think you're mother should lighten up and assume HER responsibilities as a parent, and let you enjoy the last couple years of childhood that you have left, before you become an adult.

14 is a good age to start learning how much all of those things you buy and participate in really cost. I'm sure your mom doesn't mean for you to pay for ALL of it, but she has the right idea. I was wayyyyy younger than 14 when I started what I'll call "helping out"- which is what I see cleaning your aunt's house as. I cleaned for a lot of family members, babysat, walked their dogs, etc. The idea is that you earn money, build up some work ethic and help your loved ones all at once. Think of it this way - you're able to go to summer camps at least! With a real job (one that you'd need your working papers for), it's very difficult to find any flexibility!
Good luck!

I didn't have a job until I had turned 17. I think your mom is being totally irrational. If you want a job to start saving up money, that's a good idea, but I think that you should wait. Enjoy your summers while you can, or just do the side work like cleaning your aunt's house.

At 14, you're still a minor. While that's an okay age for you to help out with household chores, such as mowing the lawn or taking out the job, it is young (by US law) to have a job outside of your home where you earn an income. Also, your mother's argument about you needing to buy your own clothes is moot, as it is her responsibility to provide for her minor child. I'd dare say that she is being irrational at this point.

Since its school is out and you probably not doing anything, your Mom can ask you to start earning some money, permit or no permit and maybe help buy your needs or things you asked her to buy for you. It is reasonable that you help since you can now.You have to understand that on schooldays your Mom do everything fro you and its very taxing to Mothers, give her some slack and be a good child, she need a break too. Mothers need a break as much as you do and now that you are capable to help then treat her as you want to be treated good.

Your mom is either a selfish *****, or she's trying to teach you that hard work pays off... I can't tell. Either way, it won't kill you to clean your aunt's house, BUT if she's gonna be a pain about it make sure you get better than minimum wage.

Well i think it depends on the job. Mc Donald's and stuff like that i think 14 is fine. Now on if it's something like child prostitution I think you are a little late. You should have started at about 12. Good luck on the job hunt. :-)
