Only time mine ever smoked or burned was when someone scrubbed them w/ a scowering pad and ruined years of fat cure.
I've never had a dutch oven that was burried in the ground and covered with coals chip. Maybe you got ripped on the skillet itself ( quality wise) For me, I tend to buy a "Wagner" but that's at least 15 years ago. The rest are 70 years old and older.

What most people don't know about iron skillets is that they need to have constant oil on them. NEVER!!! Wash a cast iron skillet in the dish washer. To make things stop burning, get some vergetable oil and coat the pan in it. Put it in the oven and let it bake just like that for about 20 minutes at 350. Then, take out the pan and add a touch more oil. Let it set over night and woo hoo! it should stop sticking and peeling. When you are done cooking with it, simply rinse and put a bit more oil on it. It's okay to wash it once in a while, but make sure you keep the oil in it. Good luck!

Have seasoned it correctly? That could be your problem. You need to oil it real well and put it in a fire outside and let it burn. This seals the cast iron. Also, when you wash it, be sure and dry it or it will rust and the food will stick. Of course the longer you use cast iron, the better it gets.

wow- it chips? My guess would be impurities within the iron that are causing the chipping when heated and cooled-
I've had a good cst iron skillet for years with ne'er a problem.

Unfortunately, I think you need to ditch your skillet and get a new one-

Perhaps you left it to soak in water? I know a friend who only oil cleans the skillet after each use. They don't use soap even as this makes food stick to the skillet.

I have used cast iron for 35yrs and never had it chip.
Are you seasoning and taking proper care of it?
Always hand wash. Never in dishwasher.
I oil mine immediately after washing. I dry it with a towel and then put it on the stove on high heat to make sure it is really dry, and then I wipe it with oil and paper towel. Then I shut off the heat and let it cool before storing.
