Well, there is a biological reason we don't remember the early years. During the first few years, our "neural network" in our brain is physically growing; nerves are intertwining, memory pathways are being laid down. During this development, many of the old pathways are overwritten as the new ones are laid down over top of them (so to speak).
By age five, the pathways are established and your memory will proceed as usual. This, though, is why you at best have only a few "snippet" memories from anything younger than five -- little snapshots your mind has captured and stored, without the attached circumstances or context.
As far as the "dream" thing goes, there's a philosophy of life called solipsism where a person imagines himself as the only person in existence and everyone else is really just a figment of the imagination / objects to be used and manipulated.
Many people are capable of living within the moment and are very rooted in their physical bodies -- thus everyone is assumed to be just as real and everything that happens is assumed to be real. (In fact, they don't even really consider the possibility it might NOT be "real".)
For those who have a very abstract approach to life, however, there is little assurance that even the "tangible" world is perfectly real. Especially if you haven't developed a lot of deep relationships in life, it's easy to feel unanchored and disconnected to people, and everything can seem dream-like.
Whether you come at it pragmatically or idealistically, I think it's best to assume it is all real after all, and that other people in fact are as real as you. To believe something else can be destructive to oneself and to others, and really ruins one's motivation to do anything at all.
(Wow, very provacative question!)

I agree with you for the most part. I disagree with the part about waking up in another life....i mean, sometimes i think everything is unreal , that i'll just wake up and it will all be new and fresh and seem more realistic. Sometimes things are so perfect or just sooo bad or it's too THERE ..you know.. i don't know how to explain it . But sometimes ..actually , a lot of times, i think that we're all living a dream but i never think past that.. like i never think about waking up from the dream, and i never think about what will happen if it's all a dream and I do wake up. But yes, I do sometimes think that this is a dream, and it troubles me too, sometimes ...a lot .

how would you explain sleep walking, murder while sleep walking or the sometimes violent sleep sex that all happen in the early hours of sleep? The people that have these conditions are normal law abiding people and the stuff they do while sleepwalking is completely out of their nature. If this fitted in with your idea then it would suggest that these people have another life as murderers or sex offenders which many people would find it hard to believe. Also as we would be in our other life while dreaming what happens when we are awake?

I had a dream that made me think the same thing for a long time. I don't think that I think that anymore but I completely know what you are talking about!

In fact, you all live in my dream! When I wake up, you're just a vague memory, waiting to fade away...
