Last night I saw a fly on my clean bathroom counter giving birth to maggots! My carpets were cleaned yesterday, there was no food left out and my house was just thoroughly cleaned. I have never heard of such a thing. Does anyone know why this would happen? I thought they only did that in degrading organic matter.

I used to capture flies when I had a pet spider. The scenario you just described used to happen with bot flies (the big shiny ones). Was the fly the same type?

From what I saw, it seems that they hatch their eggs inside their bodies, then give birth to the maggots either on a suitable spot or before they die. I guess that fly was trapped in your bathroom and was about to die, so it gave birth to the maggots there.

flies can lay eggs anywhere the survival of its offspring depends on the location if there is nothing for it to feed on it will die within an hour. flies have a very short life span and lay their eggs everywhere while they are flying around.
many never become flies themselves because of bad location. if you could search and hunt around on a maggot hunt I am sure that you will find thousands of these single maggots laying about if they stayed maggots but the thing is once they die they easily turn to dust. but you know a single maggot is not the worse that could happen all kinds of insects lay eggs all over your house and I could tell you things that happen while your asleep but well I will leave that for maybe another post.

Maybe she had nowhere else to lay the eggs since you didn't having any decomposing matter laying around : )
