I expected to help with my children college education, I did not expect the children to choose expensive schools and room and board. My expectatiions were that the cost would be within the means of both parents. My ex has remarried a person who has a large income and they selected an instate school less than an hour from their home that is very expensive and just room and board is over 10K per year. I never expected "cost of an education" to include room and board. I expected also to have some say in the school based on my ability to pay.

Well, civilly talk to your ex, and the person your ex married and tell them that you can't simply afford the cost of tuition, room, board, etc. What you can do is help pay for those things in what you do have such as books and other expenses. As parents, you and your ex have a responsibility to do what's best for the children regardless of whether you are together or not. It seems as though the new spouse can afford the fees and if so, then the couple should make arrangements to pay for the education. If there is a problem with you not being able to afford paying tuition and your ex is offended then legal action should be considered and some amicable arrangement needs to happen. If that doesn't happen and you end up still having to cover the bill, then I suggest that you tell your children that they don't have the luxury of going to an expensive school, not unless the step parent is paying for it, for you surely can't afford it, and tell them to chose a school more in your range. You are the parent, not them.

Maybe you should have adressed the specifics in your divorce proceedings instead of ASSUMING that it would be something you can afford. You should be happy that your kid/kids are even going to college!

Get a lawyer, head back to court, and do it in one "H" of a hurry! If that's the actual wording of your decree, you're about to get munched!!!
