If you believe that you will obtain an afterlife regardless of your actions in this life, then one has nothing to do with another. You perservere in this life to enjoy the experiences of this life. You'll to the same in the next. Sort of like owning a car. You take care of the car you have now, and use it as you see fit, even though you know that someday you'll have a different car. And until it's time to get a new car, you try not to screw up the one you currently have. And when you get that new car, you'll repeat the process.
If you believe that you have to earn your afterlife (or earn a good afterlife), then the answer is self-evident.

Most people believe in the afterlife, but they've never seen it, so it's not really tangible for them. They know they'll probably go to heaven but while they're here they feel like it's guaranteed that they will still "be". People are afraid of the unknown, and in this day and age I'm sure there's quite a few who want to live longer because they're afraid they're going to hell.

There is no after life. We live one. We die once. This life on earth is temporary and we strive to go to Heavenwhich is an eternal life.

Some don't but they on the ones that Nature plays a trick on by making them live to be a hundred.

Personally, I like to put more emphasis on the quality of life. People who work so hard to prolong life are usually afraid of dying.
If your faith is strong enough, there is nothing to fear from death.

Others try to live longer to outweigh all their bad deeds with good.
