In theory there would be 3 left, but what if the farmer was a bad shot and missed. Therefore I cannot tell how many birds are left.

It depends on whether you mean how many are left alive (3) or how many are left on the fence (none, probably).

the 2 dead ones are left as they can't fly away but the rest fly off. so the answer is 2
