What would you do if someone told you something horrid about your mother the same day she was taken to the hospital? You ppl have to realise that Zizou is human too! Sure he's supposed to be professional and rational , but like none of you... REALITY CHECK.. he's not perfect either!
This is a report form BBC:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2006/5169342.stm
BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.
She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.
The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:
He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourse

I think Zidane was already frustrated at the beginning of the game. He seemed to have distant himself really far from Cannavarro when they exchanged flags and football, hardly a friendly handshake or anything. I thought he seemed agitated but I didn't rule it as anything. I guess his annoyance or frustration escalated over time. It was shocking I agree, but who in this world hasn't venged out anger publicly despite knowing there will be repercussions. It happens. To me Zidane is still an amazing player, the whole incident just added to his smogasboard of everchanging personality and football history.
If all the claims of racial slurs are true, Materazzi deserves it. SAY NO TO RACISM, that's the Fifa campaign, racist remarks should not be treated so lightly.
If I was Zizou and my mom was in the hospital and such a remark made to me,and I couldn't hold my anger any longer, I would have done the same thing. But after I did it, I would realise that I should have done that AFTER the match.
Sometimes things need to unfold there and then at the exact moment or it will lose its validity. To me, my image of Zidane is still not tarnished. He's an incredible player.

This is not true. Zidane was talking **** the whole game and making fun of people and putting them down. He was also rubbing in that BULL **** PK that was awarded by the ref. Then Materazzi said "Your mom is so hot" Get the facts right. Zidane is an idiot. He has done this before too. He is not the graceful person you think he is. He has excellent skill. He is a great footballer, but not a great person. He has been suspended numerous times for similar actions before./ He is known as a hot head and he did it again.
Get over it. If it wasnt for the helpo of the cross bar and the refs PK, there wouldnt even be PKs.
FORZA ITALIA.

PANCHO, you are a filty little italian, SOB. If Zidane had been italian (u so wish), and he did that, you would be backing him up. So YOU get over it the fact that italians cheated and that was a well awarded penalty. The scandal will reveal that it included game fixing in this tournament, too, like all others. When somebody insults you, (like now) you tell me what will you do? Smile and walk away, and after I continue to insult you, you will still do the same. The Italian defence was taunting him and it wouldn't be the first time that Italians were called racist fuc-ks. If you know that something is bother an opponent you would try to capitalize on that, wouldn't you. So when they blow up in your face, don't be surprised.
Allez les Blues, "Forza Italia to ****"

Maybe Zidane should have watched "Bend It Like Beckham"
I would say Zidane's history of bad reactions to racial slurs is a weakness rather than evilness. It's somewhat understandable, even if he should have been prepared for something like that. Once you've shown a weakness, somewhere along the line, someone else is going to try to take advantage of it.
It's also tough to say it was a premeditated comment by Materazzi. If you watch the entire sequence, there were a few words exchanged by both of them before Materazzi decided to get in one last verbal shot as Zidane was trotting away.

Zidane hasnt headbutted before you idiot. If someone insulted my family they would get way more than a headbutt. Zidane is the greatest player in the world. Yeah, he made a mistake by acting like that. Like EVERYONE does. He isnt perfect and people should stop judging him. It isnt anyones place to judge the guy on what he did. remember, you make mistakes too.

What would I do? Either just ignore the idiot and channel my anger in football so I can put more energy in scoring and punishing the offender by my success.
Or report him to referee if I feel it is necessary .I would never react as Zidane did.

Even though we don't really know what happened yet, I can tell you this much if it had been me on that field and he had said any of the things that the rumors are saying he did, then I would have done one of two things. I would have slapped the s**t out of him... I really don't blame Zizou. If it had been anyone of us we would have reacted too.

Who knows what was really or not but them? I certainly wouldn't believe the liberal media or anyone on here (whom I don't know), so the only way to solve it is put them both in a cage and let them have it out. The survivor walks out. Simple as that. Mano a mano, baby!!!!!!!!!!!!

i read that too
but i'm pretty sure that both of them were insulting each other
why does no one ask what made materazzi say that? he must have been pretty pissed and insulted to say something along the lines of that (if this is indeed true, no one knows as yet) but you didn't see him do that now did you
