I have a 17 year old ficus tree that my mother in law just gave me. It is about 2 foot tall. I would like it to grow taller, any suggestions on how I do this? I thought about re potting it, but I just moved it last week from it's old house to here, and I have heard that ficus are drama queens about where they are located, so I thought that maybe I should wait. Thanks!

Yeah wait a bit and if it isn't dropping leaves like crazy then it isn't freaking out on you.
Repotting it will encourage it to grow more!

That's correct. Large ficus, such as a "Moreton Bay Fig" and the like, should never be planted in a yard smaller than Rhode Island. Roots on the surface can be trimmed and removed back to the trunk without hurting the tree, but eventually, subsurface roots will pop up further away. Beautiful tree...monumental pain in the neck.

Are you sure it's a ficus ? I planted about 20 of them around my boarder 3 to 4 yrs ago. Some of them are at least 10 to 16 ft tall. I live in Florida, that could be a factor.

Whatever you decide, don't get sympathetic and "free Willie" by planting it in your yard. You will end up doing the same as the rest of us, and that is pay a tree surgeon to remove the monster after the roots wrap around water and sewer lines and start busting out concrete. Ficus, schmikus!

What type of ficus is it? There are dozens of different types and some need to be treated differently than others.
