Teh queen lays thousands of eggs. the workers fertilize them to make more worker bees that gather pollen. the unfertilized eggs become drones, who work in the hive and cannot reproduce.

The queen bee/wasp is the only one that can make babies (larvae)
Once a year, a few of her eggs become male or female, and fly away from the nest...
After a crazy three-dimensional love making session, the "princess" will be able to found a new nest, and start laying eggs.

Doesn't the queen bee get fertilised in flight and then lay all the eggs? Not sure about wasps.

Yes. They lay eggs in their hives so they can get a hand getting pollen for honey.
