Someone told me that you could make a compass with cork, a needle, and magnet in water. I need to know exactly how.

you rub the needle with the magnet for a while and then put it into the cork and then put that into a bowl of water. the needle point will show which way north is.

Run the needle from back to front over the magnet, put the needle through the cork, and float it in a glass of water.

Magnetize the needle by running it across the magnet. Place the needle on top of the cork. Place the cork on a glass of water where it is floating on top of the water. If you did it properly, the needly will point to magnetic North.

I thought in boy scouts they tought a way to use a match as a compass...?? But I forgot completely how it worked.
