It refers to a mythological person, Satan, who is/was described as evil. Part of the good-evil attempt to describe the world.
While there are evil, that is, satanic acts by humans there has never been any verification that there is a person or being named Satan behind evil. It is just humans trying to avoid responsibility for their evil acts, saying that they were tempted by Satan. Just immaturity and silly nonsense.
Some school kids get fascinated by the concept of evil. It is just their attempts to avoid responsibility for their bad conduct or rebel against their parents and society.
I teach school and I had a kid who insisted I call him "Satan", which I refused to do. He would write "Death", "Kill", satanic symbols, and "4/20" (Hitler's birthdate and also the police call for marijuanna) and other provocative things on the test papers he would turn in to me. I had him in two classes. I reported him to the principal and had his parents come in for a parent teacher conferance. Such a person is trying to create fear by his actions and can be called evil and a serious even dangerous threat. We put some serious limits on the kid to curb his destructive behavior. But there is no Satan behind it all. Oh, and he flunked one class and made a "D" in the other. Just barely. He wouldn't do the work requred to pass with a decent grade.
