Years ago my mom had my old desktop and used it only for email and recipe searching on the internet. Lately, she's been talking about getting another.

She doesn't need a lot of bells and whistles -- she's 72 and won't venture out much past email and IM.

What's the least expensive, but best laptop to buy for her needs?

I would set her up with a low-end Dell laptop (with technical and service support) and create a user account for your grandma with limited abilities and access to her computer...so she can just e-mail, browse the web, etc.

But I'd also set her up with Firefox for better (and safer) web browsing and a good anti-virus application as well.

for email and IM i'd suggest to buy either the toshiba satellite a105-s2081 or acer aspire 3624 both are priced at 399 after rebate. probably for your mom satellite is better coz it has 15.4 " screen as to aspires 14.1

I always recommand ACER laptops (travelmates or aspires). They are really great. They are goodlooking and hardworking. U won't regret buying them!
