I will be starting my major in Nursing this fall. I 've been accepted after few years of hard work. But I want to find out if my medical record will be a problem when I apply for work. I have attempted to commit suicide and it left a police record, and medical records of my suicide attempt and depression at big and nationally operating hospitals. I'm afraid that it may get in the way of my Nursing career. ...............
Do you know if it will or not?
THANKS.

I think you will need to talk to someone in your nursing department about that. That is a valid question. I know that to take the medical boards (the exam you must pass for your license) you will need to answer background questions. As long as they allow you to take the boards, you should be okay to work I would think. Most employers only ask if you have a record of felony and even then they are not legally allowed to hold that against you I think.

i think you can still become an RN and will be a better RN b/c of the pain you went through...so if confronted with your past attempt, i think you should say your past depression is what motivated you to nursing, to be caring, empathetic and that if it "got in the way," it would be in such a positive manner that you would never belitte anyone's pain

It might since there is that whole oath thing with trying to save lives and not take them. On the otherhand if you can prove to them that you have gotten help to fight this illness and have "recovered" I'm sure you can be considered. Especially these days when there is such a shortage.

Guess it depends on who is hiring you. But consdiering the circumstances of how the medical field is understaffed with nurses, it might not impede you too much. as long as you can prove you're getting some sort of treatment.

no medical records are not publicly accessible so don't worry. they only need for you to take a drug and disease test to become a RN. As for police record its not a crime so it won't show up on background checks

I am glad you are still here :) If the position you apply is stressful and mentally demanding then I can see how this could be an issue. But if its not-I don't see a problem with it.
