My son use to do that. When he does it grab both of his hands and say no. He'll grow out of it.

My 9 month old does the same sometimes. Besides, my mother taught him a song in which he has to touch his head, but not slap, but he likes more to slap his head... It's a bit funny, but I don't show him that. I simply say him NO, and he stops. but I will try teaching him to clap his hands...

My 5 year old still does this on rare occasions, he did it as a toddler. Its just a way to express himself. Teach him other ways to show excitement. Like raising his arms, clapping hands, jumping up and down, etc.

It is probably quite normal. However, I would watch the child closely for a while to be sure his hearing was intact.

hon my 15 month old does the same thing, my doc. said it was normal, its a way to comfort themsevles
