Why is some of the silverware at my local diner magnetized?

The silverware is cheap plated steel, not stainless steel.

Perhaps there is a strong magnet in the door, which will attract the spoon towards itself if you purloin a few spoons!

an industrial dish washers can do that, if the silverware is washed many times.

ferrous objects can be temorary magnetised quite easily. something like an industrial dishwasher could even do it.
