George Washington Carver didn't discover peanuts. He found new ways to use peanuts. He was working on ways to make peanut farming more profitable.

What he did do was find a bunch of novel uses for a crop that was already there. Now I'm hungry, I think I'll go make a peanut butter sandwich.
