I know of 2 good and free antivirus
Avast! and AVG
Avast! is a very good "no-worry" antivirus. I mean you install it and just let it run without doing anything, it just protect your computer effectively.
Unfortunatly it uses up a good amount of ressources because it scans every accesses to files.
AVG is free for personal use. It is a good antivirus and is my favorite because of its memory and cpu usage. If you have a not-so-good computer, it's the one to use. however it scans some things automaticaly but to make the better use of it, you must manually scans things you download (right click - scan with avg).
Which one you chose is just a question of preference.

I've been using avast! antivirus for the past several months and it's worked great for me, updated nearly almost daily, has a low memory footprint, doesn't bog down speed, and can run totally invisibly. You don't even realize it's on.
Alot of other people reccomend AVG antivirus as well.

I think that Norton is the best. When it comes to antivirus software I wouldn't trust anything free.
