Can one not find happiness without riches that are material like money? What about the riches of the mind and the heart?

If you can endure hardship and suffering,
If you can stand to watch those you love be sick and go without treatment just because you can't afford it,
If you can tolerate substandard housing,
If you can survive back-breaking work for minimal pay,
If you believe in providing your children with access to the worst education your government can provide while you live in a crime-infested neighborhood,
If you want to be a target in every law enforcement officer's sights:

If all this is alright with you,
then live as lowly and simply as you like.

There is nothing intrinsically honorable or "spiritual" about poverty or renouncing wealth. Most of those who are condemned by the economic and social inequalities of our society to spend their lives in the "lower class" would gladly trade their lives for whatever level of comfort you may have.

Are there values that an individual might place more importance in than financial concerns? Of course. But idealism has a way of souring into bitterness when the reality of poverty sets in. It may not be wise for an individual to become obsessed with acquiring wealth at the expense of everything else, but neither is it wise to neglect to provide for one's basic needs and desires.

while it is true that a good recipe for happiness and well being is inner peace and balance,it is also true that when we hunger or cant make ends meet that this upsets and saddens us,even the richest people in the world have their share of problems....there has to be a balance.
