Beta is a pre release before the finished product. A company can release a beta version so that the users can try out the software, find bugs, and report it back to the company for fixing. Then, when all bugs and errors are solved they release the finish product, which will work, hopefully as it should do.

Beta means that the software is still in a testing phase and may not work in the same way the final product will. Some companies have public beta tests where anyone can download their software and use it, and then return feedback to the company in order for them to make the final changes before release, while some beta tests are private and only available to those asked to join.

As something that is "Alpha" is the best, a "Beta" is a "second best" or "almost there". So software that is "almost there" - not quite ready for final release - is called a beta version.
