Downloading books isn't possible if you don't want e-books (unless you mean e-books in the sense of books that are published only online).

Depending on what type of book you want will depend on where you can go. I don't know any site that has current books, but there are lots with "classics." You will rarely find new books online because of copyright infringment. Older books (like the classics) have expired copyrights (or never were copyrighted) so various places can republish the text.

For example, if you go to Barnes and Noble you can find lots of "BN Classics" usually setting on a special disply -- if you look in the stacks you'll find not only BN's version of the story but also a Penguin publication and maybe a Norton publication, etc. All of these companies change the font a little, add an essay, list further sources -- they do something to make the text "new" so they can profit from it.

If you want classics try:
Project Guttenberg (one of the best!)
Bartleby
or
UPenn's online digital library

However, you may also want to check out your local library's website. A lot of libraries now have subscriptions to NetLibrary which increases their collection and makes books avalible online. You'll need a library card and have to register to the site, but it's really handy. The other thing about the site is that different libraries have different collections on NetLibrary so if you have more than one library card to different cities see if they all subscript to it and see if you can find more.

Good luck and happy reading!

I thought that by definition, any book you download is an e-book? Perhaps I have this wrong, but I have a suggestion for where you can find many public domain books available for free.

It's a site called Guttenberg Project. It's an ongoing attempt to locate, scan and make available on line, every public domain book ever written. Ambitious project, but check it out.
