because they're afraid of reality/truth, whatever theirs may be. they would rather live in the fantasy (their projection of what they *wish* their truth was) than the actual reality -- which, unfortunately, postpones real change and retards their growth as human beings.
the really scary thing is when people lie pathologically, to the point where they don't recognize the difference between reality and their lies... and even start to believe their own lies.
lies are usually an indication that either a person isn't happy with his/her life, or hasn't fully accepted him/herself. and change (making something you don't like, into what you WANT it to be) can only happen after you face reality -- even if that reality is painful. there's a reason why they say "the truth hurts"! and also a reason why they say it will set you free.
i'm not an absolute truth purist or something (i am guilty of the occasional little white lie where "nobody gets hurt," although i try to avoid them, and don't like doing it)... but these things make sense.
i'm glad you asked this question; i've been seeing it around a lot lately and thinking about it myself. actually, there was a dr. phil episode about this a few nights ago too... it was pretty interesting.

There are different reasons why people lie. It is never good to lie because there is always a chance that you may get caught in your lie and you lose the trust of the people you lied too.
A compulsive liar is somebody who is insecure about them self they make up stories or lies because they think it makes them more attractive, or interesting. When in fact to me those types of people get on my nerves.
Then there is the guilty person. This person will never fess up to their mistakes or take responsibility for their actions. So they lie their way out of any bad situations.
The acceptable lie is the white lie. This lie is okay to use if the truth will hurt the other person. Use your white lies wisely and use good judgment. Sometimes a white lie can back fire, and may end up hurting the person in the long run anyways.
I don't like people lying to be, and I am not a liar. I don't like the chance of getting caught because it don't like to hurt people

i think every1 has definitely lied in their lifetime! Itz probz bcoz ppl may want2 make their life sound more exciting, or ppl cud just lie 2 get out trouble or a situation which they r not comfortable in. As well if u hav a secret that u don't want ne1 to find out u may lie. Also they may lie 2 a mate so they don't hurt their feelinz. There are so many reasonz why. But usually itz 2 cover up somfing or 2 make them sound bigger ppl! But when u lie u usually eventually will get found out and find yourself in a tricky situation. Like i have done a few times.

People lie because they have inherited the tendency to lie from the "Father of the Lie"...Satan. So, until he is destroyed (and he will be soon) people will continue to lie. This is something we need to work on and pray about. A liar can change but they need help and guidance from prayer.

There are a number of reasons why someone might lie:
* In an attempt to avoid what they think will be unpleasant consequences.
* Because they are hiding something.
* Because they think that telling the truth will somehow hurt someone else.
* Because they don't actually know the truth and are trying to cover that fact.
* Because they like to play games.
* Because they just enjoy lying.
The list goes on.

I think people lie for various reasons, but I feel the reason you lie to someone you love is because you don't want to hurt them.

Most of the time, to either protect themselves or someone else.
Some people also lie to get what they want or stop something they don't want from happening.
And some lie just because their lips are moving.

For some it is compulsion from childhood on..."Oh I have that toy too, only mine is bigger and better!" For others it is because they have been lied to themselves and rather than expose themselves they create an alter ego of sorts. Others do it because they don't want to offer up the real details of their lives because their cheating on their spouses/significant others and they're just plain phonies.
