I can't say I agree with French politics...and lack of support for the US in the past five years...but when I was in France in '99 I found the people to be helpful and generally good-natured, as long as I tried to communicate first! :) My best experiences were outside the major cities and far north (Normandy coast). Unfortunately, many people lump politics with people, so there's some lingering anti-French sentiment.......don't worry, we'll get over it :)

In all honesty, I do not have a very favorable impression of the French. They strike me as snooty, stuck up, haughty, and anti-American. What gets me the most is the hypocrisy of it all. The French bash America for being a decadent, money-grubbing police state. On the other side of the coin, France's economy is looking shaky due to their socialist economic policies and the fact that their population is getting old and not being replaced by younger workers. The result is a big productivity crunch which will causes the kinds of student riots that ocurred earlier this year when the French government finally tried to fix the problem. Racism is also prevalent throughout France and much of Europe. Even the soccer star Henry has to deal with a constant stream of pejoratives due solely to his race. This would be bad enough, but France gives off the impression of being 'enlightened' in comparison to the backwards religious zealots of the new world. How asinine.
Now I want to temper this by saying that I know that not all French people are arrogant and anti-American, just like not all Americans adhere to the stereotype. But if I had a dollar for every time some European came up to me or a friend of mine to try to teach me about foreign policiy...I guess they just overlooked the fact that France was supplying Iraq with missiles. Oh, and their soccer coach fervrently believes in the power of astrology. But I digress. I have nothing against the French people as long as they don't have anything against me. I know by venting here I've given the impression that I'm just as bad as the people I'm attacking, but seriously, people need to be evaluated individually and not on the basis of a group or label.

I'm American and I like the French people. I've met some really nice people from France, Germany, Norway. etc. Some in real life, some on the internet. So if that was your question - there is your answer. :)

The French people are fine I suppose. The French government is full of a bunch of wet noodles who never fight for what is right. They just expect to be rescued when it backfires on them. (Case in point...World War II)
